PUPPIES AND KITTENS are on the menu in some parts of Switzerland.
When a farmer's cat or dog has babies there are bound to be spare ones
While in most of Europe eating man's best friend is prohibited, the Swiss only bar the trade and distribution of its meat and meat products, not its private consumption.
An animal welfare group urged the government to close this legal loophole.
'Depending on personal preferences the dogs are stored in red salt or a herbal mix for two weeks and are then smoked in the house fireplace," said Norbert Guenster, manager of the Germany-based European Animal and Nature Protection Association.
'We think the Swiss government should protect dogs and cats and prohibit their consumption.'
Swiss animal welfare groups say it is hard to estimate how many pets land in Swiss frying pans each year but a law would not stop the longstanding tradition because what gets served for dinner in private homes is none of the state's business.

I don't know any swiss people who eat cats or dogs....
SO??? Tell me this... How is that ANY different than eating a hamburger or hotdog (cow, pig)? Why are puppies and kittens so much more special. Cows and pigs are just as innocent... Is it because of their cuteness? If so than you have no right to complain. So let me know. What is so bad a bout eating puppies and kittens? I'm Swiss and we don't eat more cats and dogs then Americans. Now to the vegetarian, I'm a protector of plants and I find it offending that you eat BABY sprout. They have feelings too you know. It's a living breathing individual that actually screams (scientifically proven) when you cut it rudly off. You plant murderer! It just hasnt a mouth to make a sound which makes it even more horrible. FREE THE PLANTS from Vegetarian cruelty!!!
Actually, if you google it you will find that the Swiss do indeed hunt cat. There was a big thing in 2008 when hundreds of French cats went missing on the border of Switzerland and France. The Swiss had to admit to and review their law allowing Cats to be killed for their fur. The law even allowed that if a cat wandered more than 600 meters from home they can be considered a stray, captured and killed for their fur. And I have also read that in back country here cat and dog are on the menu. And I always wondered why there were so many cat missing posters.
